Our dome systems have been successfully used in hundreds of installations across the UK and Europe. Air Domes efficiently create vast unencumbered internal spaces and are a cost-effective, fast-track alternative to traditional buildings.
With a life expectancy exceeding 20 years, these robust buildings transform the use of facilities offering the ability to open in any conditions all year-round. Where required Air Domes can also be inflated on a seasonal basis.
Merchiston, an independent boarding school based in Edinburgh, offer excellence in education and extra curricular activities. The school leadership team identified the need to enhance the facilities for their elite tennis academy and also the desire to create a facility that could be used in any weather throughout the year by all pupils and the local community.
Rocklyn worked with the Merchiston team to design, acquire the relevant approvals and install the air dome seamlessly into this historic campus.
Rocklyn Air Domes provide a cost-effective alternative to traditional buildings and facilitate all-year-round indoor sports. These multi-use domes can be used for numerous sports but are increasingly being used in commercial settings for other purposes including, storage, schools and hospitals.
Rocklyn is able to design and build Air Domes to suit specific needs with features that suit the project for example lighting systems, heating ventilation and insulation.
Rocklyn Air Domes come complete with intelligent control systems that can be operated remotely and back up systems that can accommodate power failures including a patented ‘pressure-frame’ which provides a complete seal at the base of the structure, making the dome more secure and better insulated.
Air Domes have the ability to withstand extreme weather conditions, making them playable all year round. Aviation-grade instruments monitor weather conditions and automatically react accordingly.
These lightweight, versatile structures combine speed of assembly/disassembly with the strength, safety, and finish of a permanent building. Once the appropriate permissions and infrastructure are in place Air Domes can be inflated in a day.
Rocklyn Air Domes are extremely reliable structures and have a life expectancy exceeding 20 years.
Rocklyn Air Domes can be designed to have a high translucent inner skin which eliminates the requirement for internal lighting during daylight hours, reducing electrical running costs by 30-50%. Intelligent fans only operate when required minimising energy usage.
Cable Domes are comprised of 2 or 3 layers/skins, held in place by a steel cable net which is anchored at multiple points around the perimeter.
The skins and structural cable-net assembly are then inflated by the introduction of positive air pressure, provided by powerful blower units, and managed by a central control system. The dome may include optional items such as heating systems, insulation, backup generators and specialised lighting and sound systems and controls.
The dome will include backup generators, emergency escapes and remote monitoring.
Smooth Domes use a different method of anchoring and utilise the PVC fabrics and double skin construction to provide the structural integrity required for the local climate. Typically these will use heavier material making them less appropriate for regular removal or seasonal use.
“Rocklyn’s Cable Domes are a high quality product, but more importantly the team has a ‘can-do’ attitude and a willingness to share knowledge and experience with a potential client. We would not hesitate to recommend Rocklyn as an excellent partner in any project.”
“We are very satisfied with our Cable Dome. The quality of the product itself is excellent, it is highly durable and has withstood some extreme weather conditions since its installation. The service we received was second to none and we would have no hesitation in recommending Rocklyn Air Domes and also their services.”
The majority of Rocklyn domes are used for sports. In a commercial setting this allows the earliest possible payback of the investment as it facilitates 365 days a year usage in consistent conditions. These uses have ranged from professional to grass roots football and from indoor mini golf to driving ranges.
Designing and building Air Domes for tennis courts is one of Rocklyn’s specialities. Tennis, more specifically winter tennis, was the source of early dome development in the UK and it has transformed the fortunes and utilisation of numerous facilities across the country as well as offering a valuable social and exercise hub for thousands of members.
Rocklyn is increasingly being asked to supply domes into commercial settings where covered protected space is required. The low capital cost, minimal infrastructure requirements and speed of project delivery are ideal for numerous applications eg storage facilities, emergency relief for hospitals/vaccination centres, schools assembly halls and community hubs.
