We designed, engineered and delivered this innovative smooth air dome at Aberystwyth University’s Penglais Campus, supporting the university’s commitment to sustainability and its goal of achieving net-zero emissions by 2030.
The dome’s opaque double skin prevents overheating in the summer and losing heat in the winter, promoting low energy usage. It houses an environmentally friendly gym featuring the latest in self-powered fitness equipment, including Matrix Fitness Target Training CXP bikes, which generate their own power through user activity, reducing reliance on mains electricity. To complement the cardio equipment, a selection of high-performance strength training machines, including the Matrix Fitness Ultra Series and Magnum Racks, were incorporated.
Our dome has allowed for the number of stations to be doubled from 65 to 130 and is open to students, staff and members of the public. It is also used for team sports such as netball and basketball as well as the universities ‘Fit-Together’ group exercise programme.
"We take great pride in the facilities we have here at the Universities Sports Centre which are open to students, staff and the local community."
"This was an exciting project for us, really pushing the boundaries of an installation to be as sustainable and future-proofed as possible."
